Suicide. It's a hard topic to discuss. In 2012, Monroe, Wisconsin natives Kurt and Teri Ellefson lost their young son, Jacob, to suicide. One year after losing Jacob, they knew they needed to turn this tragedy into something greater. So, they created Jacob's SWAG, a non-profit focused on suicide prevention, education, and awareness.
This is a trailer for Got Your Back - Suicide Prevention, Education, & Awareness with Jacob's SWAG. This episode launches Tuesday, January 18th on YouTube, Apple Podcast, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts. Links are here:
Kurt and Teri took the tragedy of losing their young son, Jacob, and have made an incredible impact on the world. One year after losing their son, they created Jacob's SWAG. They have provided 92 scholarships to local high school graduates, provided seminars to local schools, and created a phone app called Got Your Back. This phone app is literally saving lives. They partnered with episode 12 guest, Patrick Bodell of Synqronus Communications to develop an app that has resources for people who are considering self-harm and suicide. The app is free to download and has easy to use functionality for people who are considering self-harm. Even if you aren't considering self-harm, I encourage you to download it. There are things that are helpful for anyone, which they describe in episode 16 of Wisco Legacy.
Kurt and Teri are doing incredibly inspiring work from a tragedy that shook them to their core. I have two young kids and I could not imagine going through what they went through. I'm incredibly proud of everything they are doing to spread awareness and educate others about suicide. Thank you Kurt and Teri for joining Wisco Legacy to share your story!
